Is a transfer consultant worth it?
It depends on your goals. If you're aiming for a TAG campus in a major with a clear path, your college's counselors and free tools are often enough. A consultant is most worth it when you're applying to highly competitive programs like UCLA, UC Berkeley, Berkeley Haas or USC, changing majors, applying to UCs and private schools together, or can't get regular time with a counselor.
When free help is usually enough
- You qualify for a TAG at a campus you'd be happy to attend, and you're on track to meet its terms.
- Your major's preparation courses are clearly listed on ASSIST.org, and you're following them.
- You can meet with your college's counselor or transfer center more than once a term.
- You're comfortable writing the four UC Personal Insight Questions and getting feedback from a writing center or teacher.
When a consultant is usually worth it
- Highly competitive programs. Berkeley Haas admitted 4.9% of transfer applicants in 2025–26, and about two-thirds were ruled ineligible, almost always for a prerequisite mistake. At that level, small errors cost admission.
- Changing majors. A late switch often means catching up on prerequisites and explaining the change in your essays.
- Several systems at once. UC, CSU and USC have different applications, deadlines and essays.
- Limited counselor access. Community college counselors often have very large caseloads, which makes regular one-on-one planning hard to get.
- Your essays. PIQs are where strong students most often lose ground, because they list accomplishments instead of telling a story. See a before-and-after example.
What it costs
Private admissions consultants vary widely in price, and full-service packages can run into the thousands. At Pacific Admissions Group, Pathway Planning is $500, a Full Application package is $3,000 for up to 6 schools, and single services start at $150 for one PIQ review. Payment plans are available. Questions to ask any consultant before you pay
- Have you worked with community college transfer students specifically, not just high school seniors?
- Who will I actually work with?
- What exactly is included, and how many sessions?
- Will you write my essays? (The answer should be no. A good consultant helps you write your own.)
- Do you guarantee admission? (The answer should also be no.)
- What are your terms if I stop partway through?
A middle option
If you're not sure, start small. Book a free 30-minute call to get an honest read on where you stand, or a $175 strategy session on one question, like your school list or TAG. If you move to a package within 30 days, what you paid counts toward it.
