UCSD transfer requirements

UCSD evaluates transfer applicants holistically. Here's what you need to be competitive.

Academic Requirements

UCSD transfer requirements:

  • 60 UC-transferable semester units (90 quarter)
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA (competitive admits average 3.4–3.8)
  • Complete 7-course pattern requirements
  • Junior-level standing required

Major Preparation

Major-specific preparation is critical at UCSD:

  • UCSD screens heavily for major prerequisite completion
  • STEM majors require strong math and science sequences
  • Check ASSIST.org for your CC-to-UCSD articulation
  • Some majors are capped/impacted with higher GPA thresholds

UC Application & PIQs

Standard UC application with UCSD-specific considerations:

  • Mandatory prompt about major preparation
  • 3 additional PIQs (350 words each)
  • UCSD values research interest and intellectual curiosity
  • TAU due January 31 with fall grades and spring plans

TAG Advantage

UCSD participates in the Transfer Admission Guarantee program:

  • TAG guarantees admission for eligible CCC students
  • Must file TAG application by September 30 (before UC app)
  • Requires specific GPA thresholds by major
  • Not all majors are TAG-eligible - verify on UCSD TAG page

Transfer Admission Guarantee (TAG)

TAG is one of the most powerful tools available to CCC transfer students applying to UCSD.

What is TAG?

The Transfer Admission Guarantee (TAG) is a program that guarantees admission to six UC campuses - including UCSD - for eligible California Community College students who meet specific requirements.

TAG is filed separately from the UC application, during September 1–30. If you meet the GPA and course requirements for your chosen major, you are guaranteed admission. This is as close to a sure thing as exists in college admissions.

TAG
Guaranteed admission - not just priority consideration. Meet the requirements, file on time, and you're in.

TAG Requirements

CCC enrollment - must be attending a California Community College

GPA threshold - varies by major, typically 3.4–3.8 range

30+ UC-transferable units completed by end of summer before TAG filing

Complete major prerequisites by spring before transfer

File by September 30 - the TAG portal closes and does not reopen
