UCLA transfer requirements

UCLA evaluates transfer applicants holistically, but strong academic preparation is the foundation. Here's what you need to be competitive.

Academic Requirements

These are the minimum requirements to be eligible for consideration:

  • 60 semester units (90 quarter) of UC-transferable coursework
  • UC-transferable GPA of 3.2 or higher
  • Two courses in English composition or critical thinking
  • One transferable math course (intermediate algebra prerequisite or higher)
  • Four courses across at least two areas: arts & humanities, social & behavioral sciences, physical & biological sciences

Major Preparation

This is where most students make critical mistakes. UCLA requires completion of major-specific prerequisite courses before transfer:

  • Check ASSIST.org for your specific CC-to-UCLA course articulation
  • Complete as many major prep courses as possible before applying
  • Highly selective majors (Business Econ, Comm, Psych) should have all prep done by fall of application year
  • Missing prerequisites is one of the top reasons for rejection

UC Application & Essays

The UC application includes one mandatory prompt and three additional Personal Insight Questions (PIQs):

  • Mandatory: Describe how you've prepared for your intended major
  • Choose 3 of 7 additional PIQs (leadership, creativity, challenge, etc.)
  • Each response is 350 words maximum
  • No letters of recommendation or transcripts during application

IGETC vs. Major Prep

One of the most important strategic decisions for UCLA transfers:

  • IGETC (Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum) satisfies all UCLA GE requirements
  • For impacted majors, completing major prep is often more important than completing IGETC
  • You can do partial IGETC and still benefit
  • Strategy depends on your specific major - this is where expert guidance matters most

UCLA Transfer Alliance Program (TAP)

TAP is one of the most powerful - and underutilized - tools available to CCC transfer applicants.

What is TAP?

The UCLA Transfer Alliance Program is a partnership between UCLA and over 50 California community colleges. By completing your CC's honors or scholars program, you earn TAP certification - which gives you significant advantages in the admissions process.

TAP is specifically for California Community College transfer students. You must have completed 30+ semester units at a CCC to be eligible. TAP is not a guarantee of admission, but the numbers speak for themselves.

67%
TAP admit rate at some partner colleges vs. ~17% for non-TAP applicants. That's nearly 4x the odds.

TAP Benefits

Priority consideration for admission to majors within the UCLA College of Letters and Science

Alternate major review - if not admitted to your first choice, you get a second chance at a different major (TAP-only benefit)

Exclusive scholarships - admitted TAP students can apply for $5,000 renewable scholarships

UCLA library access while still at your community college

Direct entry to UCLA College Honors without additional scrutiny upon admission
