Academic Requirements
Cal Poly SLO has the highest standards among CSUs:
- 60 transferable semester units (90 quarter)
- Minimum 2.0 GPA, but 2025 admits had a 3.39–3.91 GPA range
- Golden Four courses completed with a C- or better (critical thinking is waived for some engineering majors)
- Cal Poly is the most selective CSU - treat it like a UC
- GPA requirements vary significantly by major
Major Preparation
Cal Poly's 'Learn by Doing' philosophy means major prep is paramount:
- Every major has its own required and recommended transfer courses
- Engineering, CS, architecture, and business are most competitive
- Check ASSIST.org for your CC-to-Cal Poly articulation
- For fall admission, coursework must be done by the end of the spring before you transfer
Cal State Apply
Same CSU application system, but Cal Poly reviews differently:
- Application window: October 1 – November 30
- Cal Poly uses Multi-Criteria Admission: GPA, your major's required courses, the Golden Four, and work, volunteer and leadership experience
- No UC-style essays, but you answer a transfer questions prompt and list work and activities in Program Materials
- Architecture and Art & Design portfolios and the Music supplemental application are due Jan. 31
ADT & Transfer Notes
ADT status helps but doesn't guarantee admission at Cal Poly:
- ADT guarantees CSU admission but Cal Poly is not guaranteed
- ADT holders still need competitive GPA and major prep
- Cal Poly is the exception among CSUs - it's as selective as mid-tier UCs
- Area of residence is one factor in Cal Poly's review; attending a nearby community college alone doesn't earn priority
